The respondent is a 32-year old man from Afghanistan who spent four years in Korydallos, before being taken to the Petrou Ralli PRDC in May 2024 under charges of illegal stay. After four months, he was transferred to the Xanthi PRDC. In Petrou Ralli, the respondent reported not being allowed outside of his cell, even if he asked to reach an asylum office. He described the detention conditions in Petrou Ralli as “very bad”, highlighting especially the complete lack of access to outdoor spaces and the extreme heat and absence of air conditioning leading him to sleep on the cold floor to get some respite. Reportedly, the respondent and fellow detainees were not allowed to freely use the toilets, which at times forced them to urinate in police officers’ empty bottles or coffee cups. The respondent also explained that detainees in Petrou Ralli had to drink water from the shower as no bottled water was provided to them. As for the food, the respondent described it as “super bad”, and recalled that his legs and hands were swelling after eating. Communication was heavily restricted as his mobile phone was reportedly confiscated during his detention. Further, four euros were needed to pay for the internal landline and contact families and civil society organisations, but the officers gave no money to the respondent to use it. Finally, the respondent reported being subjected to verbal violence by police officers at Petrou Ralli, and witnessing beatings of a fellow detainee who was trying to facilitate communication by providing interpretation.
