- Narrative
The respondent is a 32-year old man from Afghanistan who was arrested and taken to the Petrou Ralli PRDC in May 2024 due to being undocumented. In Petrou Ralli, the respondent reported that he was not allowed outside his cell during his entire period of detention. He described the detention conditions in Petrou Ralli as “very bad”, highlighting in particular the complete lack of access to outdoor spaces and the extreme heat and absence of air conditioning leading him to sleep on the cold floor to get some respite. Reportedly, the respondent and fellow detainees were not allowed to freely use the toilets, which at times resulted in them being forced to urinate in police officers’ empty bottles or coffee cups. The respondent further explained that detainees in Petrou Ralli had to drink water from the shower as no bottled water was provided to them. The respondent described the food provided to detainees as very low in quality, and reported experiencing swelling in his legs and hands which he attributed to the poor diet in detention. He reported that he did not have access to his mobile phone while in Petrou Ralli, as it was confiscated by the authorities. There was reportedly a landline in the detention centre which costs four euros to use but the respondent did not have enough funds to use this and no financial support was offered by the authorities. Following his detention in Petrou Ralli the respondent was transferred to Xanthi PRDC for a further period of detention.
