The respondent, a 24-year-old man from Morocco, was part of a group with other two men from Morocco. The group was arrested in Polykastro police station and subsequently transferred to Idomeni police station where they were detained for 26 days prior to being moved to Metagogon Transfer Facility in Thessaloniki where they were detained for a total of 2 months and 15 days before being released. Upon apprehension, the group was handcuffed and immediately transferred to Idomeni police station. Upon arrival at Idomeni police station, the group was not provided with food and was not informed about the length of their detention. After two days at the facility the group was informed in English about the possibility of claiming asylum. The respondent proceeded asking for asylum and, on the same day, had a two-hour interview with the presence of a translator. The respondent reported that the group was detained in a room with six other men and that they did not have access to an open area for exercise. To receive food, detainees had to sign a document in Greek twice per day without being provided with a translator. Additionally, detainees were not provided with any type of legal or psychological support. The respondent described the conditions in Idomeni police station as very dirty. “It’s like a prison. No fresh air or things like this. […] One day felt like one week. Because you have nothing to play with or lose time with. So one hour feels like three hours.” After 26 days, the group was asked to sign a paper in Greek without being provided with a translator and was subsequently transferred to Metagogon Transfer Facility. Upon arrival at Metagogon, the respondent had his phone confiscated. The group was detained in a room with a toilet, a shower, and a television. The respondent reported that the facility had ten rooms and every room contained six to eight people. The respondent was given a mattress and a blanket to sleep, which reportedly caused him skin problems due to bed bugs. The respondent reported his health condition to the police officers however he was made to wait three days before being taken to the hospital. Reportedly, one officer at Metagogon was verbally abusive towards detainees: “[the officer] was always shouting bad words in Greek”. Furthermore, the respondent was provided with approximately 6 euros per day to buy food at a visiting market. He reported that this was the only way to access food in Metagogon. Reportedly, the only way to make phone calls was to buy a card to use the fixed phone in the facility. “If you want to talk with your family [...] you have to buy it. But you cannot buy it. If you buy it, you stay hungry”.
