The Special Detention Facility of Serres (Greek: Ειδική Εγκατάσταση Κράτησης Σερρών) has been used since July 2025 to detain third-country nationals, predominantly individuals transferred from the islands of (Gavdos and Crete)[https://web.archive.org/web/20260430172354/https://rsaegean.org/en/crete-gavdos-7336-refugee-arrivals-h1-2025/] from Sudan, Egypt, Eritrea, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The Detention Facility is located within the Sintiki Controlled Access Centre for the Temporary Accommodation of Asylum Seekers (CAFTAA), an open structure which has been operating since March 2020 under the Ministry of Migration and Asylum. Since summer 2025, the Serres Special Detention Facility has been operating under the jurisdiction of the Greek Ministry of Citizen Protection and is similar to a Pre-Removal Detention Centre. The Detention Facility was established to detain people arriving by boat from North Africa, who faced automatic detention upon arrival in Greece during an unlawful three-month suspension of the asylum procedure from July 2025. The majority of those arriving to Gavdos and Crete were detained either in Amygdaleza Pre-Removal Detention Centre, close to Athens, or the Serres Special Detention Facility. The Facility has continued to be used as a detention centre since the lifting of the asylum procedure suspension in October 2025. As official figures do not distinguish between the Special Detention Facility and the CAFTAA population, the total number of individuals held in the detention facility is unknown.
