The respondent is 22 years old and is from Syria. He was reportedly apprehended in Orestiada and subsequently detained at Orestiada police station for 20 days, then moved to Metagogon Transfer Facility for approximately one week prior to being transferred to the Avlona Special Juvenile Detention Establishment where he was incarcerated for a period of 1 year and 3 months after being charged with smuggling. Upon apprehension the respondent was severely beaten by three officers who accused him of smuggling. The officers reportedly held his face on the ground, on top of a rock, and started beating his face. The respondent was then reportedly transferred in a van to Orestiada police station. In Orestiada, the respondent was detained in isolation for 14 days in a dark room. During the detention, the respondent was given food twice per day, had access to drinking water only from the sink in the bathroom, and was not allowed to go outside at any point. After 16 days, the respondent was taken out of isolation, was fingerprinted, and was reportedly forced to sign a document in Arabic declaring that he smuggled three people into Greece. The respondent said that he was provided with an Arabic translator. The respondent asked for the assistance of a lawyer and reportedly asked for asylum at the police station, however, the officers did not listen to his requests. “In their eyes, I was a criminal, a smuggler. [...] They gave me a paper translated into Arabic saying: ‘You smuggled three people.’ They gave it to me, to do fingerprints and sign it. It was like an obligation.” Furthermore, in Orestiada the officers confiscated the respondent’s phone, made him unlock it, and refused to give it back to him even after he was released. The respondent added that the police reportedly stole approximately 30-40 euros from him during his detention and confiscated all his personal belongings. After approximately 20 days, the respondent was transferred to Metagogon Transfer Facility in Thessaloniki. In Metagogon, he was detained in a room with other 20-30 people and was unable to go outside. After approximately one week, the respondent was transferred to the Avlona Special Juvenile Detention Establishment in Athens. The respondent did not report any specific issues with the conditions in Avlona Prison. In each room, there were reportedly between five and six people. The respondent reported that there were many security cameras within the facility. During his detention, he was provided with medical care, adequate food and hygienic conditions. In addition, he had access to education. The respondent reportedly spent 1 year and 3 months in Avlona, before being released.
