The respondent is 30 years old and is from Morocco. He was arrested shortly after arrival and detained for 25 days at Fylakio RIC and subsequently for 30 days at Paranesti PRDC. The conditions at Fylakio were very dirty and the respondent reported: “Everyone there was sleeping on the floor.” The respondent initiated an asylum application at Fylakio but was transferred to Paranesti PRDC before receiving a decision. At Paranesti, the respondent was body searched by officers working at the facility and had his phone camera broken. Other members of the group he arrived with received the same treatment on arrival. He shared a room with 11 other people and reported that other rooms were even more overcrowded. The mattresses provided to detainees were very thin. The respondent did not receive information from the authorities in a language he could understand and was reportedly made to sign documents written in Greek without translation, the respondent reported: “You have to sign it, even if you don’t understand.” The respondent reported that there were no lawyers at the PRDC and he did not see any NGO or UN staff there. “Nobody comes to Drama [Paranesti PRDC] to check on people. You see only police officers.” There was no access to doctors or psychologists at Paranesti and officers reportedly refused to provide any medical help to detainees who asked for it. The food detainees were given was of poor quality. The respondent added: “There was no respect for detainees.” Officers reportedly sometimes took detainees to isolated rooms and inflicted beatings on them, as a form of punishment for perceived bad behaviour. The respondent reported that several people attempted to commit suicide after undergoing this treatment and medical assistance was not provided to these people after they sustained injuries: _“People do not know why they have been put inside this cell and hurt themselves using knives. Even when they do this, nobody takes them to hospital.” _
