Section 5. Governmental Posture Towards
International and Nongovernmental Monitoring and
Investigation of Alleged Abuses of Human Rights
A variety of domestic and international human rights groups generally
operated without government restriction. Government officials were often
cooperative and responsive to the views of these groups, although several
organizations working on migration matters continued to report undue
pressure, including unreasonable bureaucratic obstacles; increased financial
scrutiny; defamation lawsuits; criminal charges of money laundering,
espionage and fraud; and press reports intentionally targeting groups with
fabricated allegations of criminality.
