- Περιγραφή
The respondent is 34 years old and is from Iran. He was arrested in Athens shortly after arrival, having applied for asylum via the government’s online application form. He was detained at Amygdaleza PRDC for approximately two months and subsequently at Corinth PRDC. After being detained briefly at a facility in Athens where his fingerprints were taken, the respondent was transferred to Amygdaleza PRDC. He had his photograph taken at Amygdaleza and was body searched by officers. He described the physical conditions at the PRDC as extremely dirty. The respondent reported: “As soon as I got inside, I felt terrified. [...] It was cold and it was a very very dirty place.” When he asked for information on his asylum case from officers, he was reportedly ignored. There were no lawyers or civil society organisations present to assist with his case. He slept in a container with eight beds in it, although due to overcrowding some people had to sleep on the floor at certain times. There was reportedly no heating or air conditioning in the container. The respondent reported: “We didn't have a proper window or a proper door that we could easily close. Because of the rain, it was leaking all the time and it was very cold. We had to sleep with our jacket and our jumper on because it wasn't enough for us to get warm.” The showers at the facility were reportedly in poor condition and hot water was mostly unavailable. One toilet was reportedly shared between 10-15 detainees. The respondent reported: “The food was very bad. They were bringing you something that you cannot eat. [...] We never had a warm meal.” There was a doctor present but it was difficult to see them and medical treatment was minimal, with detainees frequently only given paracetamol as medication. Officers reportedly used abusive language towards detainees and used isolation as a punitive measure. He explained that protests against lack of water had occurred at Amygdaleza and many of the protestors had been relocated to Corinth PRDC. The respondent described the conditions at Corinth PRDC as extremely challenging - including cockroaches in the sleeping areas. The respondent reported: “If you wanna sleep or if you wanna get changed or anything, you are surrounded by cockroaches. It is worse than jail. [...] Every human being that is staying there has mental issues, psychological issues because it's not the right place and it's not the place for a human at all.” Detainees received a meal at 4pm each day and from then onwards were locked in their rooms until the following morning. There was no access to hot water at Corinth. While there was reportedly a doctor and nurse present, they did not have capacity to treat the large numbers of detainees.
