- Περιγραφή
The respondent is 23 years old and from Egypt. He was arrested in Athens after receiving a rejection on his asylum claim and taken to Amygdaleza PRDC by officers wearing civil clothing. “They have no mercy. They bring anybody who is undocumented even if they are coming back from work. It doesn’t matter morning or night.” At Amygdaleza people were held in overcrowded containers without enough beds in them. The respondent reported: “Even sleep, which is the least thing we should have as people, we can't do because we don't have blankets, the beds are very bad. [...] We asked them [the officers working at the PRDC] for more blankets. They never gave us any.” Most people at the PRDC had received a rejection on their asylum application and some had been in detention for over one year. The respondent explained that some people paid lawyers between 1000-1500 euros to assist with their cases, but had not managed to leave detention. Food was provided two times per day and the conditions of the toilets were described as extremely dirty. “It’s the worst situation I've ever been in.” There was no access to medical assistance or psychologists within the centre. The respondent explained: “Even if you are really sick, you have to roll on the ground and try to sound more sick. They don’t take you seriously until you are dying.” There was reportedly a translator present who told people that if they did not voluntarily return to their country of origin, they would be forcibly deported by authorities. The respondent explained that there was one non-governmental organisation present at the PRDC but they did not provide much support. A number of incidents of violent treatment and punishment of detainees who had been involved in fights were reported, including isolation in cells, deprivation of food, and physical beatings.
