- Περιγραφή
The respondent is 45 years old and is from Syria. He was reportedly apprehended at sea by the Hellenic Coast Guard with 120 other people, including women, children, and old people. He was brought to Rafina Port and then transferred to Malakasa Reception and Identification Centre (RIC) where he stayed with his 17-year-old daughter for 22 days. At the point of apprehension the officers reportedly confiscated the phones of the transit group. The transit group was reportedly not given any water by the officers and was kept on the deck of a big grey boat with Greek letters and signs for approximately 11 hours. During this time, the treatment by the officers on the boat was reportedly very violent and the members of the transit group were reportedly told to keep their heads down. “If you raise your head and try to look at [us], [we] will give you the ultimate experience of violence.” Reportedly, this kind of violence was inflicted on four to five people on the boat by the officers using “mainly their hands.” Upon arrival at Rafina Port the transit group was reportedly transferred to a room which the respondent described as approximately 40 square metres in size and they were given water, food, and blankets for the night. Afterwards, the transit group was reportedly brought to an office, where they were asked to give their name, nationality, age and documents. The following day, the transit group was transferred to the Malakasa RIC reportedly on vehicles that had cells inside. At Malakasa RIC, the respondent reported the presence of two translators, one Arabic and one Farsi. The group was reportedly informed by UNHCR staff that they were entitled to obtain a free lawyer. In Malakasa, the respondent and his daughter were held in a container with two rooms and a shared toilet. He reportedly stayed in one room together with his daughter and in the other room there was a family with two children. Furthermore, they were given hygiene products such as shampoo and shower gel, and cleaning tools to clean the container. The respondent reported that they were given three meals a day and as much water as they needed. The respondent noted that there was a doctor in the camp from 12:00 until 15:00 who worked together with a translator, so it was “very easy to communicate” and to get medical assistance.
