-4Copy of the letter transmitting the CPT's report Strasbourg, 17 March 2000 Dear Sirs, In pursuance of Article 10, paragraph 1, of the European Convention for the prevention of torture and inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, I have the honour to enclose herewith the report to the Government of Greece drawn up by the European Committee for the prevention of torture and inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment (CPT) after its visit to Greece from 26 October to 2 November 1999. The report was adopted by the CPT at its 41st meeting, held from 7 to 10 March 2000. The various recommendations, comments and requests for information formulated by the CPT are summarised in Appendix 1. The CPT requests the Greek authorities: i. to provide by 1 June 2000 a consolidated reply covering issues concerning the Ministry of Public Order raised in the present report (Section II A) and in the report on the 1997 periodic visit; ii. to provide within six months a response covering issues concerning the Ministry of Justice raised in the present report (Section II B). The CPT would be grateful if it were possible, in the event of the reports forwarded being in Greek, for them to be accompanied by an English or French translation. It would also be most helpful if the Greek authorities could provide a copy of the reports in a computer-readable form.
