Case study: Mahmoud* is a Syrian refugee and a survivor of the deadly June 2023 shipwreck
off the coast of Pylos. His application was lodged in mid-June 2023 at RIC Malakasa and was
accepted one month later, in mid-July. A subsequent update from the RIS confirmed that
Mahmoud had been called to sign the consent form to receive the financial allowance no
earlier than mid-July. Therefore, he never received the allowance for the month he spent as
an asylum seeker at RIC Malakasa, since he has been recognised as a refugee.
