The respondent is a 23-year-old man from Syria. He was reportedly apprehended near Alexandroupoli and subsequently taken to Feres police station and the Transfers Department of Thessaloniki (Metagogon) prior to being transferred to Volos Juvenile Prison where he was incarcerated for one year and six months. At Feres police station the respondent was reportedly pressured to confess to committing crimes relating to smuggling which he did not commit. He was charged with smuggling eight people from Turkey to Greece. He was later transferred to the Transfers Department of Thessaloniki (Metagogon) where he stayed for approximately four days. The respondent was then transferred to Volos Juvenile Prison, where he was incarcerated for one year and six months. In Volos the respondent reported that the food “wasn’t good”. Moreover, he described the medical assistance as inadequate, as prisoners were only given paracetamol for any health issues they might have. He explained that he was detained in a cell with 20 people, and that the prison guards were reportedly physically and verbally abusive towards the detainees. “They are beating up people and if someone is doing something wrong, they are punishing everybody. And if they want to add six months to somebody in prison, they just do it. They are beating people nearly every day. They torture people. Including the guy who controls the prison, the director. And they are really hostile towards us.” The respondent recalled that there was one particularly violent officer who reportedly inflicted beatings on the hands and bodies of detainees using a baton.
