Detainees have been held in the yard behind the Office of the Port Authority of Symi which lacks appropriate infrastructure. Detainees are required to sleep on the ground. There is only one extremely unsanitary toilet without functioning flush. No additional sanitation or hygiene facilities are available.

In one reported incident a group of unregistered asylum seekers who were detained at the facility was not provided with any sanitary products, adequate food or fresh water. Staff reportedly only brought them dry bread, cheese and some biscuits, which they handed out to the group in daily rations, ignoring the dietary needs of group members with medical conditions. The detainees had to pay for the goods they received. The prices varied every day. They were told to drink from the hose next to the toilet. The water was warm and tasted very bad. By the time their detention came to an end, all the children in the group were ill, suffering from vomiting and diarrhoea.
