The Nea Vyssa Border Guard Unit (Greek: Κλιμάκιο Συνοριακής Φύλαξης Νέας Βύσσας) is located in the village of the same name, in the same building as the Border Surveillance Operational Centre. It appears to have been established in the same period as other Border Guard Departments. The detention facility has been operational since at least 2007.

Nea Vyssa is one of 8 Border Guard Departments in the Evros region which function as short-term holding facilities for people crossing the Turkey-Greece border irregularly, including both asylum seekers and those who have been charged with so-called ‘illegal entry’ to the territory or ‘facilitation of illegal entry’ (smuggling). For all Border Guard Departments, information on the detention capacity and the size of the holding cells is difficult to determine due to the lack of consistent and reliable information over time. Such information has typically emerged following visits by NGOs and the Council of Europe Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT). Monitoring of these facilities has decreased since 2023.
