The respondent is 26 years old and is from Algeria. When he was arrested near Thessaloniki, he was taken to a police station, where he stayed for a month, after which he was transferred to another police station, where he remained for another 3 months. According to his testimony, at the first police station, he was beaten by the police officers upon arrival. He was offered 5,80 Euros per day, with which he had to cover his food, water and cigarettes. Tap water was so bad that his skin and stomach were infected. Despite his complaints, he was not taken to the hospital until his lawyer demanded it. The cell was overcrowded with no windows or access to natural light. In the second police station, he applied for asylum and was released after three months. 9 days later he was rearrested and transferred to Paranesti PRDC, where he remained for almost a year. The police officers that arrested him confiscated his papers. He was detained in a cell with another 12 people. He said that there were not enough beds and blankets among them and during the winter it was too cold inside. There was hot water but no access to hygiene items. The food was too little and of bad quality. He received no information about his case and had to resort to a private lawyer. Everything he was expected to sign was in Greek and asking for interpreters brought more harassment from the police. He describes violent acts against him almost daily, including physical aggression, insults and hate speech. The police ignored their calls for clothes and medicine. After an incident of self-harm, another detainee was taken to the hospital from where he escaped and could not be found. Upon return to the centre, the police reportedly physically attacked all the detainees.
