The respondent is a 44-year-old Algerian man who arrived in Greece in 2019, and was cumulatively administratively detained for nearly three years during the six years he spent within the country. Prior to his detention in Paranesti Pre-Removal Detention Centre (PRDC) the respondent was reportedly detained for a period of 15 days in an unidentified police station before being transferred to Special Ηolding Facility of the Thessaloniki Aliens Police Directorate (Metagogon), where he was detained for one month. In Paranesti, the respondent reported that he was not informed of the duration of his detention and was not provided with translation assistance when he was required to sign documents by the authorities. He reported that he did not understand the contents of these documents. The respondent reported being held in a container of approximately 50 square metres with four Egyptians and four Algerians. Detainees were provided with food once per day, which consisted of two meals, and additional food items were available for purchase through a market, which reportedly sold items at inflated prices. The respondent described the provided meals as being of very poor quality, often undercooked and insufficient in quantity. The respondent reported that he did not have access to any legal support while in detention and his phone camera was smashed by the authorities upon entry to the facility. He further explained that detainees were responsible for cleaning their accommodation areas but were not provided with sufficient amounts of cleaning products.
