The respondent is 42 years old and is from Syria. He was apprehended in Athens, subsequently held in Petrou Ralli Pre-Removal Detention Centre (PRDC) for five hours and then moved to Amygdaleza PRDC for one month. During the apprehension, the respondent reported that he was forcibly held in a parked van for about five hours while the officers kept on bringing new people inside. As he got inside the van, he reported being insulted and beaten with plastic batons by three officers speaking Greek. The respondent reportedly counted 45 people inside the van. Upon arrival at Petrou Ralli, the respondent reported that he was photographed, his fingerprints were taken, and he was not provided with any food or water. After five hours, the respondent was reportedly transferred to Amygdaleza PRDC where he stayed for one month. Upon arrival, the respondent reported being given one very old blanket. During his first day in Amygdaleza, the respondent experienced physical violence from the officers in the facility. “The reason was to show us that we cannot cause any problems here and we have to be quiet. [...] If anybody said something, the police would beat them with batons and kick them”. The conditions in Amygdaleza were described as very poor. “The food was really old and the bread was moldy, once it got to you it was already blue”. Reportedly, there was a truck coming three or four times per week, where detainees could buy fresh vegetables and food. Due to a cardiac problem the respondent needed medical support. He reported asking more than 20 times for medical assistance, but he was given only paracetamol. While he was in detention, he fainted and lost consciousness, but he was not taken to the hospital. Instead, he was taken to a room where they gave him antiseptics, painkillers, and a drip feed. After one month in Amygdaleza he was released, however the officers refused to give him back his personal belongings.
