The respondent is 46 years old. He was arrested for the first time in Athens due to being undocumented, and taken to a police station in Patras where he was forced through physical abuse to sign papers which he did not understand as they were written in Greek. He was then detained in Amygdaleza PRDC for three months. He applied for asylum in Amygdaleza but received two rejections and was subsequently transferred to Xanthi PRDC. The conditions in Xanthi was poor, and he described the place as an abandoned building with dirty mattresses, which was not fit for animals. He shared a room with 5 people in Xanthi, and there was no air conditioning or heating facilities. There was a space outside that was accessible from early morning until the evening. There was a critical lack of medical care, and he reported many detainees self harming due to the stress, and not receiving medical support, including psychological care. He said that when he had money, he was able to request some basic items which would be bought by the police and provided to detainees. The police reportedly remained outside the first fence surrounding the detention centre, unless there was a problem. They wore green shirts and trousers. He did not experience physical violence in Xanthi or Amygdaleza as he tried to avoid the police. However, he did witness people being physically beaten in Amygdaleza, particularly certain nationalities and if anyone went on hunger strike.
