The respondent is Algerian and 37 years old. He was detained in Paranesti PRDC. Before that he spent months on end in police stations and also in Korydallos prison. Even though he claimed to have an ID card, the police did not accept it and he was forced to go through the asylum procedure again. But he had no lawyer or interpreter to explain to him the details of his case so it is not clear to him why he had been detained. He described Paranesti as unhygienic and without access to regular warm water. They were given one shampoo bottle once per month and per cell. During the summer, the air conditioning was on only for two hours per day. They had access to a very small outdoor space from 8 in the morning to midnight. Despite requesting to see a psychologist, he never saw one. Only in cases of self-harm were people allowed to see a doctor. He further reported racist and insulting behaviour from the police. He was also a witness to the police abusing other detainees physically.
