There is limited information on immigration detention in the Kyprinos Border Guard Department. While administrative documents and other sources suggest its detention facilities are operational, the CPT has not inspected the facility since 2007, and there are no other recent reports by human rights organisations.

In 2011, the Ministry of Citizen Protection issued a call for tender for the refurbishment of the detention area of the Kyprinos Border Guard department which would involve painting, restoration of hygiene areas, and installation of metal beds.The detention space appears to have been operational in 2013. The revamped border guard department was inaugurated in 2017. The costs of renovation works and other operational expenses were co-financed by the EU External Borders Fund (EBF) and the Greek authorities.

According to administrative documents, the total size of the detention space is 35 square metres, although it is unclear how many cells it comprises. In the report following its 2007 visit, the CPT noted that the cells at the Kyprinos Border Guard Department were severely overcrowded. Ten persons were held in a cell of 14 square metres, and five persons were held in a cell of less than 7 square metres for over 40 days at the time of the visit. The cells had insufficient light and ventilation and the mattresses and blankets were dirty. Detainees rarely had access to an outside space at this time. The CPT further noted that ‘such conditions could easily be described as inhuman and degrading’. Custody records were incomplete and missing information.
