On July 5, media reported the government withdrew its challenge of the European Court of Human Rights’ ruling that the country violated Andreas Georgiou’s right to a fair trial when the Court of Cassation failed to justify its refusal to refer his question to the EU Court of Justice for a preliminary ruling. Georgiou, the former president of the Hellenic Statistical Authority, was charged with breach of duty in 2015. Trial Procedures The constitution and law provided for the right to a fair and public trial, and the judiciary generally enforced this right.
